In Real Life: Fall Group Show // Keystone Art Space

September 1 – 30

What does art look like during a pandemic?

We find ourselves looking at what is being made on a screen more often lately. How does that change our perception of it? Some may find comfort looking at works through the sterility of an electronic screen, while others find this way of seeing lacks something. Pixels on a screen don’t always illustrate the whole of the work - you might miss the depth of the brushstrokes on a painting, the reflection of pigments and sheen as you pass by in reflecting light, the dimensionality of a sculpture or installation in 3-D space.

Even so, we are fortunate that we even have the ability to view things online during a pandemic. If the screen is all we have access to, we embrace it. The gallery world has pivoted, providing for both an online presence as well as a personal experience.

This new way of seeing art was already on the rise. It expanded as a social media movement where sharing the experience digitally became PART of the experience. People viewing artwork or performance no longer had to wait until they ran into someone who would describe what they had seen or heard. They sent photos and videos as they spectated, increasing visibility and translating the spectacle into a virtual dialog.

Several months ago we entered a different time. A time where to protect each other and enjoy ourselves we have to keep our distance. A time when the experience might be created for one.

Keystone Art Space is both artist work space and gallery environment. Although we have cancelled our artist-curated shows for 2020, we have decided to hold a group show featuring the many talents of the artists who have their studios here. IN REAL LIFE is our own first experiment in this new way of seeing. One can see the works online via our website and social media, or schedule an appointment to see the show in-person.

Gallery appointments are in 30 minute blocks and will take place between 10am-4pm Tuesday - Saturday. There is a limit of 4 people per time block. Keystone is following state and county health and safety protocols for sanitizing and will admit only those wearing a face covering.

The Cityscape Show X // George Billis Gallery Los Angeles

The Cityscape Show X: Concrete and Earth
July 25 - August 29, 2020

For the last ten years, GBGLA has hosted an annual cityscape show - the theme as been broad and covered a wide ranging group of artists and works.  It is a show we’ve taken great joy in putting together and sharing.  This year, the tenth anniversary of the show, is a bit different.

Life as we know it has changed dramatically and, perhaps in some ways, permanently.  We are living in this state of unknown here in Los Angeles.  But what remains unchanged is this astounding city we live in.  Made of concrete and earth, this city and landscape anchor us.  The long low skyline remains, the mountains ringing the LA basin stand, the ocean tides come and go, our enormous sky holds steady.  And in the midst of it all, the strange and beautiful metropolis of Los Angeles exists as a place and as a dream.

Los Angeles has always been a fantasy as much as a physical location.  And now we are all dreaming of the fantasy - waiting for the time that the Los Angeles we know and love can return in all its complexity.  But the physical city remains - waiting - holding its spaces for those future days.

The Cityscape Show is a show in two parts this year - a smaller in person show on view at our Culver City location and a larger virtual show gathering work that for different reasons can't be at the gallery.

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

George Billis gallery is pleased to announce Los Angeles Light, Los Angeles native Lindsey Warren's first solo show with the gallery. In this recent body of work, Warren examines the urban and suburban landscapes of Los Angeles through dramatic and fleeting light that produces unique color experiences. The paintings affectionately represent the California city from a variety of perspectives, generating an overall portrait and vibrant interpretation of the sprawling city.

Warren writes of her recent work, "Since returning to Los Angeles in 2015, I have been focusing on representing the magical light and diverse environments of this city, resulting in portraits of viewpoints and neighborhoods that I frequent and love." Her love of Los Angeles is evident in her words and in her paintings alike. Each piece is born from layers of paint, until Warren reaches an impressive level of precision. Warren writes that she works by "constantly adding and subtracting visual elements," a systematic processes which mimics the way human memory functions to translate any specific moment in time.

Warren's history of working as a public artist, creating murals in cities on the East coast, clearly informs her painting practice. Warren uses her deep understanding of built and natural landscapes to transform scenes into flat blocks of color, a process that transports viewers through the streets of Los Angeles. Her paintings leave a familiar impression, as if you too have visited the place Warren depicts.

A Love Letter

Launch LA is proud to announce A Love Letter, a two-person exhibition by Lynne McDaniel and Lindsey Warren that poetically paints a love letter to the city of Los Angeles through light dappled vignets of the often overlooked corners of the city. Rather than an exact replica of specific locations, both artists create work that address the overall feeling of living in Los Angeles, woven together through smokey panoramic vistas and sunset streaked skies.

Using the language of landscape to explore current events, as well as the sometimes-surprising beauty of urban existence, Lynne McDaniel’s work deals with her anxiety over events in the news as well as the environmental and ecological changes caused by natural disasters, human intervention, and the passage of time. “My art making is my response to whatever is affecting my world. In my home in California, I am surrounded by images of fires and drought, yet signs of change are everywhere and often more subtle.” Her most recent body of work depicts images from her daily walks along the Arroyo Seco near her studio, and in the foothills near her home. It is both a close examination and a documentation of the familiar but always changing landscape, so vital to the artist’s practice. The black and white palette and white deckle border of the paintings evoke the nostalgia of vintage photographs, like artifacts from a world that’s already gone.

Juxtaposed against McDaniel’s monochromatic paintings, Lindsey Warren’s recent urban landscape paintings flush with a colorful palette that celebrates the unique light of the city of Los Angeles. Through nostalgia and rediscovery of her hometown, after 15 years on the east coast, her series of urban landscape paintings affectionately represent LA from a variety of perspectives. Suburban landscaping and trees paired with utilitarian facades that frame the changing hues of the sky, generating individual portraits of neighborhoods within the sprawling city. Warren is drawn to dramatic and fleeting light that produces unique color experiences that depict specific places in the city, but with a universality that anyone who lives in Los Angeles might find familiar. Synthetic and natural elements combine to create the scenes that are exclusive to this urban Southern California landscape. Through a process of combining photographic references, systematic processes, perception and memory, Warren translates specific moments in time into the presented compositions.

“The paintings,” says Warren, “are visual responses to my past and current homes and stem from observations of basic daily encounters that are commonly overlooked. Since returning to Los Angeles in 2015 I have been focusing on representing the magical light and diverse environments of this city, resulting in portraits of viewpoints and neighborhoods that I frequent and love.

The Cityscape Show IX // George Billis Gallery LA

THE CITYSCAPE SHOW IX
June 29th - August 3rd, 2019
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 29th, 5 - 8pm

George Billis Gallery is pleased to present The Cityscape Show IX, a group show of works by gallery artists and invited guest artists. The exhibition runs from June 29th to August 3rd with an opening reception on Saturday, June 29th from 5-8pm.

The Cityscape Show IX is the gallery’s ninth exhibition of its kind. The show is a visual exploration of the environs we inhabit. Los Angeles is a unique city in many regards - in its architecture, geography, and natural environment. Spanning a space that includes mountains, ocean, and desert, Los Angeles and Southern California are a source of immense inspiration to many artists. This exhibition brings together a group of artists whose individual works together show a multifaceted and fascinating city. These pieces illustrate the ever-changing urban landscape. From the downtown skyscrapers and iconic landmarks to the graffiti-ed back alleys and vast freeway networks, from the bright lights of the Hollywood Hills and clean lines of mid-century modern architecture to the train bridges and gritty rail yards, Southern California is striking in all its extremes.

NATIVE
Recent Work by Lindsey Warren

April 13-21, 2019
Reception Saturday, April 13th, 5-8pm

Keystone Gallery presents an exhibition of paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Lindsey Warren.  In this group of recent work Warren celebrates her return to Los Angeles after 15 years on the east coast. The nostalgia and rediscovery of her hometown led to the creation of a series of urban landscape paintings that affectionately represent Los Angeles from a variety of perspectives. Close-ups of landscaping and plants are paired with wider views of downtown and suburban neighborhoods, generating an overall portrait and colorful interpretation of the sprawling city.

Warren is drawn to dramatic and fleeting light that produces unique color experiences at different times of the day and year. Each piece in this show depicts a specific place but one that anyone who calls Los Angels home might find familiar. Synthetic and natural elements combine to create the scenes that are exclusive to Southern California. Through a process of combining photographic references, systematic processes, perception and memory, Warren translates specific moments in time into the presented compositions.
